BUTCH WAS THE KIND OF RACER IF YOU STARTED NEXT TO HIM YOU FELT VERY COMFORTABLE THAT HE WAS GOING TO GIVE YOU PLENTY OF RACING ROOM.THIS TEAM WAS VERY WELL RESPECTED AROUND THE PITS AND ACHIEVED A LOT OF SUCSESS. BUTCH WAS A RACING LEGEND IN THIS AREA ,AND ALONG WITH BIG BILL MOSES MYSELF AND RAY HEATH SENIOR WE BROUGHT THE COUPES BACK TO NORWAY PINES WHICH AT THE TIME HAD TWO DIVISIONS OF STREET STOCKS.BIG BILL MOSES SHOWED UP WITH A COUPE AND WAYNE WEEKS THE BOSS OF NORWAY PINES LET HIM RUN WITH THE V8 STREETS.A FEW WEEKS LATER MY DAD BOUGHT AN OLD COUPE FROM HARRY HEATH AND WE FIXED IT UP SO WE COULD RUN IT.AFTER BUTCH AND RAY HEATH SAW THIS THEY BOTH BROUGHT COUPES. AT THE END OF THE SEASON WAYNE TOLD US IF WE COULD GET TEN COUPES TO COME HE WOULD GIVE US OUR OWN CLASS. A LOT OF US YOUNGER DRIVERS FROM THE OLD COUPE ERA LEARN A LOT OF LESSONS FROM WALLY HE KNEW HOW TO GO UP THROUGH TRAFFIC.WALLY GREW UP RACING WITH THE LIKES OF BUCK MOSES, SONNY RABBIDU , CY COBY AND THOSE CLAREMONT GUYS WHO WENT ON TO DRIVE SUPERMODIFIEDS.HE WAS DARN GOOD AND I BELIVE HE HELD THE 87 TITLE.JOHN BUCKLIN WAS ANOTHER COUPE DRIVER . HIS LITTLE BLACK NUMBER 34 WAS ALWAYS BUFFED UP SWEET EVERY WEEK.AND HE WASNT EVER IN THE WAY EITHER. HE WON MORE THAN HIS SHARE OF NIGHTS. AL SANVILLE WAS ONE OF THE MOST SEASONED GUYS OUT THERE. I SAW PICTURES IF HIM RACING IN THE EARLY SIXTIES WITH FRANK BURBANK BILL GEORGE AT NORWAY PINES WHEN IT WAS THE LEGION JALOPY BOWL IN 1961. AL RACED A LOT OF YEARS AND HE DIDNT QUIT UNTIL HE WAS READY . AND WHEN HE DID HE TOOK OVER AS BOSS AND PASSED THE REIGNS OVER TO HIS SON DAVE SANVILLE WHO HAS HAD A LONG RACING CAREER HIMSELF AND I BELIVE IS STILL AT IT, AND SEEING HOW WERE THE SAME AGE I KNOW FOR A FACT HE AINT NO SPRING CHICKEN.HES A PRETTY DARN GOOD COMPETITOR THOUGH AND HE KNOWS HOW VICTORY TASTE.I WOULD BE OUT OF LINE IF I FORGOT TO MENTION GENTLEMAN JACK COOK. JACK WAS ONE COOL CUSTOMER AND I DONT THINK THEIR WAS ONE PERSON IN THE WHOLE PLACE WHO DIDNT LIKE HIM. THAT LITTLE NUMBER ONE COUPE WITH THE WING LOOKED LIKE IT WAS FLYING AROUND THE SPEEDWAY.JACK COOK AND BIG BILL MOSES PUT ON SOME OF THE BEST SHOWS EVER RUN AT NORWAY PINES.THESE TO GUYS COULD HAVE THE STANDS ON THEIR FEET AND SCREAMIN THEIR HEARTS OUT.AND YOU THROW ROYAL MOSES IN THE MIX AND YOU GOT SOME SKIN TIGHT RACING.AND LET US NOT FORGET RICKY MARTEL AND COMPANY . THESE BOYS SHOWED UP A LITTLE LATER BUT THEY SURE DID COME TO RACE AND THAT LITTLE 76 SEDAN WAS ONE BAD CUSTOMER.RICKY COULD SLIDE THAT LITTLE SEDAN IN HOLES YOU DIDNT THINK IT COULD FIT IN.THERE WAS A NEW KID IN TOWN. BUT DONT SELL THE OL BOYS SHORT CUZ THE FUN WAS JUST BEGGINING. BIG BILL MOSES AND COOK AND COMPANY JUST UPDATED A LITTLE AND WITH A FEW RULE CHANGES THINGS REALLY HEATED UP AND THE ACTION GOT MUCH BETTER.PLUS A FULL FIELD OF LATE MODELS AND FOUR CYLENDERS THE FANS WENT WILD AND THE RACIN GOT WILDER. AND NEXT THING YOU KNOW THE OLD HEROES WERE BACK IN THE SADDLE AND THE LIKES OF RAY HEATH AND ROYAL MOSES AND THE GUYS WHO HAD BEEN ARUND STARTED TO SHINE.THE CARS BEGAN TO CHANGE A LOT TOO.THE MORE MODERN DIRT MODS WERE STARTING TO SHOW UP AROUND HERE. ONCE THE BOYS GOT THE HANG OF THESE BABYS THE RACES GOT ROUGHER AND THE PURSES GOT A LITTLE BETTER. AND THE CROWD WENT WILD.ILL TELL YOU THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN SEEING THE CROWD ON THEIR FEET WHEN YOU COME FLYIN OFF THAT TURN.THE LATE MODEL CLASS HAD PLENTY OF HEROES TOO.DONNIE SHARP IN HIS 25 CAMARO WAS ONE TUFF GUY TO BEAT AND HE WASNT AFRAID OF ANYTHING.STUART OHEARN WHO WENT ON TO BE A GREAT MODIFIED DRIVER]
HIM AND JODY YEATON PUT ON SOME GREAT SHOWS IN THE OLD LATE MODEL DAYS. ART KINDALL THE LOCAL SHERIFF WAS A COOL CUSTOMER. HE LIKED TO WEAR HIS COWBOY BOOTS WHEN HE RACED. AND LETS NOT FORGET FEARLESS PHIL MCUIN. THIS GUY LOVED TO RACE FOR FUN. IT DIDNT MATTER IFF HE WON OR NOT. HE WOULD DRINK HIS COFFEE AND SMOKE HIS MORE CIGARETTES WHILE HE RACED.HE WAS ONE FUNNY GUY THOUGH.HE ALWAYS MADE US ALL HAPPY CUZ HE WAS ALWAYS SO HAPPY.GEORGE HILL HAD A BEAUTIFUL CAMARO THAT LOOKED LIKE ROYAL MOSES COUPE WHOOM HIS DAD BLAKEY HILL OWNED. IT WENT AS GOOD AS IT LOOKED TOO.BOTH THE 38 SPECIAL CARS HAULED SOME SERIOUS YOU KNOW WHAT.RAY MOSES SHOWED UP WITH THE FIRST ALUMINUM BODY LATE MODEL. IT WAS NUMBER 37 AND GOT THE NICKNAME THE BAT MOBILE AND IT WAS ONE FAST CAR, I KNOW BECAUSE I DROVE IT FOR A WHILE AND IT WAS FAAAST.THIS BEGAN THE CHANGE IN THE LATE MODEL CLASS AND THE CARS BEGAN GETTING MORE UPDATED AS THE MODS DID AND NORWAY PINES BEGAN TO CHANGE. ONE BIG CHANGE WAS THE COST. THE DAY OF GOING TO CENTRAL METALS AND GETTING JUNK YARD PARTS WERE OVER. YOU NEEDED RACING EQUIPTMENT TO BE COMPETATIVE.THIS CAUSED A DROP IN THE CAR COUNTAND MADE IT MUCH EASIER TO MAKE THE MAIN EVENT.ONE THING THAT REMAINED THE SAME THROUGHOUT THE YEARS IS THE WAY THE WEEKS FAMILY WERE CONSISTENT ABOUT RUNNING A FAMILY SHOW AND KEEPING THE ROWDINESS TO A MINIMUM.MY DA DUSTY MOSES AND MY UNCLE BUCK MOSES WERE BOTH VERY GOOD AT MAKING RACE PARTS SO MY SELF AND MY COUSINS SAVED A LOT OF MONEY. ROYAL MOSES SEEMED TO HAVE THE SAME TALENT.AS THE CARS GOT FASTER WAYNE BECAME WORRIED THAT THE TRACK WAS GETTING TO BE TOO SMALL TO HANDLE THE SPEED THAT THESE NEW CARS WERE STARTING TO CARRY. WAYNE DECIDED IN THE FALL HE WOULD RECONFIGURATE THE TRACK TO MAKE IT LONGER . IT WAS THE MID NINETIES NOW AND THINGS WERE BOOMING.NORWAY PINES HOW WE ALL KNEW IT DISSAPEARED.TONS OF MEMORIES AND FUN TIMES AND WILD WILD RACING WOULD BE GONE TO BRING IN THE NEW CHANGE.WAYNE STARTED HIS PROJECT AS SOON AS RACE SEASON WAS OVER WITH THE HELP OF HIS FAMILY AND LOTS OF RACING FRIENDS. HE TURNED THE TRACK AND WORKED VERY HARD TO RECONFIGURATE THE NEW TRACK BEFORE OPENING NIGHT.AFTER HE GOT GOING I THINK HE REALIZED HOW HE WAS GETTING UP IN YEARS AND HE HAD TAKEN ON A TRMENDOUS TASK. STILL HE PULLED IT OFF. THE FIRST FEW WEEKS HAD THIER SHARE IF MISHAPS BUT WAYNE BEING THE JACK OF ALL TRADES HE WAS WOULD FIX THINGS AND AWAY WE WENT AGAIN. A LOT OF THE OLD DRIVERS WHO RAN NORWAY PINES FAITHFULLY DISSAPEARED WITH THE TRACK CHANGE. I THINK WAYNE WAS BOTHERED BY THIS BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE YEAR HE SOLD HIS LEASE TO THE TRACK AND RETIRED AND SO DID THE NAME NORWAY PINES.WAYNE WEEKS PASSED AWAY IN JANUARY 2009 I WAS TOLD AND I HAVE TO SAY I AM DEEPLY SADDENED. ALTHOUGH I GOT MY SHARE OF SCOLDINGS FROM WAYNE IN MY DAY. HE EVEN HIT MIKEY HAMILTON AND MYSELF WITH THE FLAG WHEN WE WERE YOUNGSTERS BECAUSE WE KEPT SPINNING EACH OTHER OUT AND IT TICKED HIM OFF. BUT I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT TEMPER CONTROL AND RESPECT FROM WAYNE WEEKS AND HE IS ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO CROSSED MY PATH THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET ALONG WITH BIG BILL MOSES BUTCH CLOGSTON LARRY WELCH SPENCER ROCK AND ALL THE OTHER SATURDAY NIGHT HEROES THAT RACED AT NORWAY PINES SPEEDWAY.I WILL ALWAYS RESPECT ALL YOU GUYS AND CHERISH THOSE MEMORIES WE ALL MADE TOGETHER AND WHENEVER I RUN INTO ANY OF YOU ITS A TREAT TO ME. THE SPEEDWAY NAME WAS CHANGED TO THE PINES SPEEDWAY AND THE REIGNES WERE TOOK OVER BY ROBERT FIARILLO A DENTIST FROM MEREDITH NH AND RICHIE CORSO AND FAMILY A LOCAL ENGINE BUILDER FROM MEREDITH.
