Kirby Montieth the Mountain man
Kirby Montieth was one of the stars at Claremont, keene ,lebanon valley and other northeast tracks.
Kirby began racing in 1972 a good friend of jack bateman and donnie ayer and many others.Called the mountain man because of his thick hair and strong build Kirby was just as intimidating behind the wheel.
Kirby was a logger by trade which explains his ruggedness.He started in the seventies with Dwight Jarvis and Donnie Ayer.They all drove for the Hodgdon brothers who were know for building some of the best cars in the northeast.The boys were known to party hearty after a good night at the races.These fellers werent above giving the car a good road test on rt 5 in unity from time to time.They liked to take ventures to Lebanon Valley NY from time to time.Kirby was good friends with Jack Batman who is well known in the upper valley region and liked to have weekend outings with Kirby and the other Hodgdon Brothers racing teams.Kirby was known to let his temper flare a little on the track and wasnt afraid to show it.Kirby drove for Lyle patterson at the end of his career.Although Kirby could be a little tempermental at times he loved kids and the kids liked him.
when Kirby was a rookie at Manadnok he couldnt see the flagman coming off the fourth turn so the hodgdon brothers cut a hole in the roof so he could see him through it.It was named the monadnok hole and one of the Hodgdon brothers cars has just been restored and still sports the hole.Kirby Montieth the mountain man died of cancer in 2008 but the people at Claremont and Monadnok speedways will never forget the MOUNTAIN MAN
